Newly established and officially opened in June 2018, The Uraidla Brewery is located and run from our hotel/café/bakery/brewery site in Uraidla on Greenhill road. Our unique location in the picturesque Adelaide Hills takes full advantage of the natural Australian surroundings, and the pure spring water sourced from our own onsite bore.
Head brewer Oscar Matthews comes from a long line of SA hotel proprietary, his keen interest in craft beer having been sparked from hands-on work in the family’s hotels. As a next step, Oscar became the chief buyer of craft beers for a number of hotels, while setting up a small home-brew system in his home garage for trials and some interesting experiments!
When Oscar’s uncle Hamish became involved in the re-development of Slo Brew in San Luis Obispo, California, he suggested Oscar join him to learn more and to help with operations. Oscar jumped at the chance and ended up spending some 9 months in this now famous, large-scale operation.
Returning to Adelaide in 2017, Oscar brought with him a wealth of knowledge in beer styles, tastes, production and systems – and a love for the freedom and creativity beer making offers. He spent some time with buddies at Adelaide house Pirate Life before making Uraidla his spiritual home and can now be found most days ensconced with his barley, hops, hoses, tanks and complicated chemistry equipment.
With his energy, passion, creativity and knowledge, Oscar will happily discuss his beers with visitors and other brewers. He and Greg plan to hold various small events to showcase and introduce their brews as they experiment with local produce, herbs and spices for a range of interesting and unique beers.
Greg Ryan grew up with strong memories of his Dad home brewing in the kitchen, in plastic rubbish bins with tea towels draped over the top; the smell of fermenting wort pervading the house.
As a young man, Greg and a few mates tinkered with home brewing as a source of cheap beer, and to see what they could come up with. One experiment, in an attempt to increase alcohol content by naïvely adding extra sugar resulted in a lot of exploded bottles!
More time needed to be spent on research and development, which saw Greg patronizing the local Adelaide brewing pubs such The Lion, The Holdfast and Port Dock hotels. Differences in styles and tastes gave Greg the incentive to seek further knowledge, and so he decided to go to the source – England. Here, he spend a few years in the brew-pubs of….. and saw how historical English pub culture was an integral part of community life.
Greg’s passion lies in the authenticity and integrity of beer making. He loves that Uraidla offers a natural, earthy environment in which to creatively reflect the regional flavours along with his personal values in this popular beverage.
